The department has always taken the first place in the Ministry of Education Key Disciplinary Assessment of since the first approval in 1989. It was noted as a standout in talent training, pharmacological research as well as novel drug development. It belongs to the second discipline of Ministry of Education authenticated key discipline of pharmacy. It is also an important component of State Key Laboratory of Bioactive Substance and Function of Natural Medicine. Moreover, the department owns Beijing Key Laboratory of New Drug Mechanisms and Pharmacological Evaluation Study. It is recognized nationwide for its outstanding achievements in both basic and applied research fields.
There are 71 staff members in the department, including 14 full professors, 13 associate professors, and 32 assistant professors. The department has a postdoctoral scientific research mobile station, 10 Ph.D. supervisors and 9 M.Sc. supervisors.
The research priorities of the department are the drug development and mechanism study of major diseases, such as cancers, psycho- and neuro-disorders, cardio and cerebral vascular diseases, metabolic diseases, infectious diseases, and immune-disorders. During the period of “Tenth Five-Year Plan”, the department undertook the first batch of National Technology Platforms for Preclinical Pharmacodynamic Evaluations of the Novel Drugs against cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
During the Eleventh & Twelfth Five-year Plan Period, the department took on programs of National Major Scientific and Technological Special Project for “Significant New Drugs Development”, including National Technology Platform for Novel Drug Preclinical Pharmacodynamic Evaluations concerning “anti-cardiovascular, diabetes & neurodegenerative diseases”, “anti-cancer”, and “anti-infectious diseases”. The department has established international standard novel drugs pharmacodynamic evaluation and mechanism study system that meet international standards, and promoted pharmacological basic and applied research field development in China.
The ongoing research fields in the Department of pharmacology include cancer, cardio and cerebral vascular diseases, psycho and neuro-disorders, metabolic diseases, infectious diseases as well as immune diseases. The department has been an important base for national pharmacological original innovation and a reservoir for pharmacology experts.
