Department of Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry

 

The Department of Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry is a key department and platform for research and development of new drugs in IMM. The research interests are mainly focused on discovery and development of innovative therapeutic agents against malignant tumor, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, psycho- and neuro-disorders, immuno-disorders and infectious disease as well. In the department, there are 41 research members in total, inculding 1 Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 9 full professors, 5 associate professors, and 18 assistant professors. The discipline of medicinal chemistry has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as key discipline in national medical universities. The postdoctoral program has been established in the department. Currently there are 7 Ph.D. supervisors and 3 M.Sc. supervisors in the department.
In the past five decades, under the guidance and encouragement of a number of distinguished scientists such as Professors Liang Huang and Xiaotian Liang, many disciplines related to the drug research and development were established and evolved into an integrated platform in the department. In the drug research and development, the abundant innovation experiences and potent innovation capabilities were developed, and a multidisciplinary scientific research team has been established. Presently, many drugs such as Bicyclol tablet, Butylphthalide soft capsules (NBP), Meisoindigotin, Imrecoxib, etc. have been launched into market. Moreover, some drug candidates including Potassium Butylphthlide, Chlorobenzopiperidone Hydrochloride, Nicousamide, levo-Clausenamide, Buagafuran and Phenlarmide are in clinical trial, and there are also a panel of patented new chemical entities under preclinical evaluation.
The research efforts of the department center on the following three fields.
1. Discovery and optimization of structurally novel lead compounds including total synthesis and modification of natural products, computer aided drug design and investigation of structure-activity relationship.
2. Exploration of modern synthetic methods and their applications in drug discovery process. It consists of asymmetric synthesis of chiral drugs, solid phase synthesis, study on the mimetics of bioactive endogenous small molecules, total synthesis of structurally complex natural products, and identification of stereochemical configuration of chiral molecules with various modern technologies.
3. Research on chemical biology. Design and synthesis of structurally diverse chemical entities (natural products or synthetic small molecules) to probe the biological function and pathological role of the novel biological targets, explore and elucidate the nature of interactions and binding modes between the protein and small molecules.
