National Center for Pharmaceutical Screening

The National Center for Pharmaceutical Screening (NCPS), of the Institute of Materia Medica, belonging to the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, is one of the major national drug screening centers in China. It was planned and founded by the Ministry of National Science and Technique under the “9th Five-Year Plan” and the “1035 Plan". In 2011, The Center achieved enormous progress in various areas, particularly in establishing research platforms, advancing research capacities, and developing novel drugs. It was approved by the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission to establish Beijing Key Laboratory of Drug Target Research and Drug Screening. There are 12 scientific and technical staff working in the Center: ten with doctoral degrees, six with senior professional titles, and five with intermediate titles. More than 40 Ph.D. students and 10 Master students have been trained in the Center.
Based on China's bio-pharmaceutical industry development strategies and national "Major New Drug Research and Development" program, and aiming at the international forefront studies on drug discovery, the goals of NCPS are to set up and promote innovative drug screening systems, and to accelerate new drugs research and development in China. Accordingly, The Center sets its research focuses on the prevention and treatment of serious diseases through drug screening and its progression, the discovery of novel lead compounds, investigation of drug candidates, and development of novel drugs, all with intellectual property rights. In addition, the Center provides technical support services for novel drug development in China.
In 1998, NCPS was the first institute in China that carried out high-throughput drug screening. The Center has performed substantial work on theoretical and strategic studies of high-throughput screening, drug targets and mechanisms, screening models, active and lead compounds, compound library and information database constructions, virtual screening and bioinformatics, and active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine. The Center has established efficient high-throughput drug screening technique systems.
NCPS has undertaken and completed more than 30 projects from national research since its found. These projects include the national scientific and technological projects of "973"and "863", the Key Programs and General Programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China, the MOST Basic Research Projects and Science & Technology public projects, the National R&D Infrastructure and Facility Development Programs of China, the International S&T Cooperation Projects of China, the Ph.D. Programs Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, the Innovative Drug Development Projects of Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission, and the National Major New Drug Research and Development programs, and others. Three new drugs (class 1.1) have been discovered and preclinically evaluated in the center.
NCPS has extensive cooperation with both national and international drug research institutions and other organizations. The high-throughput drug screening technology platforms of the Center also function as public platforms oriented towards drug research and development. The Center provides screening services to domestic and international universities, institutes, and pharmaceutical companies.
